a large group of the earlier people 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
