A throng of the ancients 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 And those on the left how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 And also our forefathers? 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 “They will all be gathered together on the appointed time of the known day.” 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
