a large group of the earlier people 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 It is We who have created you. Why then did you not testify to the Truth? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
