A large group from the earlier generations. 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 “And also our forefathers?” 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
