A large group from the earlier generations. 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
