O thou enwrapped! 1 stand up to pray for much of the night. 2 A half thereof, or abate a little thereof, 3 Or increase a little upon it, and recite the Qur’an slowly in stages. 4 We are about to cast upon you a weighty Word. 5 Prayer at night leaves the strongest impression on one's soul and the words spoken are more consistent. 6 Surely you have in the day time a long occupation. 7 Remember the name of your Lord, and devote yourself to Him wholeheartedly. 8 (He is) Lord of the East and the West: there is no god but He: take Him therefore for (thy) Disposer of Affairs. 9 And bear patiently the vain things they utter, and gracefully forsake them. 10 Leave it to Me to deal with the deniers, who live a life of comfort, and bear with them a little longer. 11 Lo! with Us are heavy fetters and a raging fire, 12 choking food and a painful punishment. 13 on the Day the earth and mountains shall shake and the mountains crumble into shifting sand dunes. 14 We have indeed sent a Noble Messenger towards you, a present witness over you – the way We had sent a Noble Messenger towards Firaun. 15 But Pharaoh rebelled against the messenger, whereupon We seized him with no gentle grip. 16 How, then, if you refuse to acknowledge the truth, will you protect yourselves on that Day which shall turn the hair of children grey, 17 Whereon the heaven will be cleft asunder? His Promise is certainly to be accomplished. 18 Indeed, this is a reminder, so whoever wills may take to his Lord a way. 19
