The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 Whereby the angels ascend unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 Verily they behold it afar off. 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 Eager to roast; 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 and amassed (riches) and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he selfishly withholds it [from others]. 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; 25 and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who keep a guard on their prayer, 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
