The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 Verily they behold it afar off. 6 but We see it near. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 And all those who are in the earth – then only if the redemption saves him! 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 Eager to roast; 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 and who observe their prayers. 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
