The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 but We see it is nigh. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 A fire that melts the hide. 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 and amassed (riches) and hoarded. 18 ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
