The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 Indeed, they see it [as] distant, 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 except those that pray 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Are free of blame, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
