The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 Lo! they behold it afar off 6 But We see it very near. 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 except those that pray, 22 Those who are constant in their prayer 23 And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, 24 For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 And those who are in their testimonies upright 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
