The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 Eager to roast; 16 It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
