The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 arise, and warn! 2 Thy Lord magnify 3 and purify your robes, 4 and defilement flee! 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 But for your Lord be patient. 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 That Day will be a difficult day 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, 11 and appointed for him ample wealth 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 and made all things smooth for him; 14 then he is eager that I should do more. 15 Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. 16 I shall inflict on him hardship, 17 Surely he reflected and guessed, 18 death seized him, how was his determining! 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 Then he thought; 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 Then he turned back and was big with pride, 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 This is naught else than speech of mortal man. 25 Anon shall I roast him into the Scorching Fire. 26 And what will make you realize what hell is? 27 It shall not spare, nor leave. 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 and it has nineteen angelic keepers. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
