The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 Arise, and warn. 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 shun uncleanness; 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 So when the Trumpet will be blown. 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 For the unbelievers, anything but easy. 10 Leave Me alone with he whom I created 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 And sons present by his side. 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 Then he desires that I should add more. 15 Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 Then looked he, 21 Then frowned he and scowled. 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 And what can make you know what is Saqar? 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 Burning the skins! 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
