Nay; I swear by the moon, 32 And [by] the night when it departs 33 And by the dawn when it brightens, 34 Lo! this is one of the greatest (portents) 35 A warning to mortals, 36 alike to every one of you, who want to go forward or hang back. 37 Each one is a hostage to one's deeds, 38 Except those on the right side. 39 In Gardens; they shall be asking, 40 Concerning the culprits: 41 [And asking them], "What put you into Saqar?" 42 They will say, "We were not of those who prayed, 43 And we used not to feed the poor; 44 and we plunged along with the plungers, 45 and belied the Day of Recompense 46 Till death overtook us. 47 So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors. 48 What ails them, that they turn away from the Reminder, 49 as though they were terrified asses 50 Fleeing from a lion! 51 Indeed, each one of them desires to be given unrolled scrolls. 52 Never! In fact they do not fear the Hereafter. 53 Nay; this is an Exhortation. 54 So whoever pleases may mind it. 55 But they [who do not believe in the life to come] will not take it to heart unless God so wills: [for] He is the Fount of all God-consciousness, and the Fount of all forgiveness. 56
