The Human (Al-Insan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Hath there come upon man (ever) any period of time in which he was a thing unremembered? 1 We created the human being from the union of sperm and egg to test him. We gave him hearing and vision. 2 Surely We have shown him the way: he may be thankful or unthankful. 3 [Now,] behold, for those who deny the truth, We have prepared chains, iron collars and a blazing fire, but 4 [whereas,] behold, the truly virtuous shall drink from a cup flavoured with the calyx of sweet-smelling flowers: 5 From a spring of which the votaries of God will drink and make it flow in abundance. 6 They perform (their) vows, and they fear a Day whose evil flies far and wide. 7 They feed the destitute, orphans, and captives for the love of God, saying, 8 (Saying): We feed you, for the sake of Allah only. We wish for no reward nor thanks from you; 9 Surely we fear from our Lord a stern, distressful day. 10 So God will protect them from the evil of that day, and grant them happiness and joy, 11 And will reward them for what they patiently endured [with] a garden [in Paradise] and silk [garments]. 12 In that [garden] they will on couches recline, and will know therein neither [burning] sun nor cold severe, 13 The shades of the garden will be closely spread over them and it will be easy for them to reach the fruits. 14 Goblets of silver are brought round for them, and beakers (as) of glass 15 Glass made from silver, which the servers have filled up to the measure. 16 And they will be given to drink there of a Cup (of Wine) mixed with Zanjabil,- 17 (The water of) a spring therein, named Salsabil. 18 ۞ There boys of everlasting youth shall go about attending them: when you see them, you would think that they are scattered pearls. 19 And when you look there [in Paradise], you will see pleasure and great dominion. 20 On their bodies will be garments of the finest green silk and brocade, and they will be adorned with bracelets of silver; and their Lord will give them a purest draught to drink. 21 (And it will be said unto them): Lo! this is a reward for you. Your endeavour (upon earth) hath found acceptance. 22
