He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 when the blind came to him. 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 or he might be mindful and good counsel might avail him. 4 Now he who waxes indifferent, 5 to a rich man, 6 though you are not to blame if he would not cleanse himself. 7 As for the one who comes to you earnestly (striving for guidance). 8 and who has fear of God, 9 you ignore him. 10 No indeed, this is a Reminder; 11 So let him who pleases mind it. 12 On honourable pages. 13 Exalted and holy, 14 In the hands of scribes (angels). 15 Honourable and obedient. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 Of what substance God created him? 18 He created him from a living germ. He determined his fate 19 Then eased the way for him. 20 Then He causes him to die and be buried. 21 Then when He pleases, He will raise him to life again. 22 No indeed! Man has not accomplished His bidding. 23 Let man therefore consider (the sources of) his food. 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 Thereafter We cleave the earth in clefts, 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 grapes, vegetables, 28 and olives and palms, 29 and burgeoning enclosed gardens 30 And fruits and fodder,- 31 (To be) a provision and benefit for you and your cattle. 32 But, when the Blast comes, 33 on the Day when each man shall flee from his brother, 34 And from his mother and father, 35 And from his wife and sons. 36 For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy 37 Some faces will shine, 38 laughing and joyful, 39 And many will be dust-begrimed, 40 Blackness overcoming them. 41 Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. 42
