He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ The Prophet frowned and turned away 1 when the blind man approached him, 2 You never know. Perhaps he wanted to purify himself, 3 Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 you eagerly attended to him -- 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 but as for him who came unto thee full of eagerness 8 While he fears [Allah], 9 From him thou art distracted. 10 Assuredly this is a reminder 11 For any one who desires to bear it in mind, 12 It is contained in scrolls highly honoured, 13 Exalted, pure. 14 By the hands of scribes. 15 noble and virtuous scribes. 16 May man be slain – how ungrateful he is! 17 Of what thing hath He created him? 18 He created him from a living germ. He determined his fate 19 and then made the course of life easy for him, 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 Then He will raise him up again when He please. 22 By no means he performed not that which He had commanded him. 23 So man must look at his food. 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 and then We cleave the earth [with new growth,] cleaving it asunder, 26 Thereby produced grain in it. 27 And Grapes and nutritious plants, 28 Olives and dates, 29 and dense orchards, 30 and fruit and pastures, 31 (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening blast is sounded, 33 on a Day when everyone will [want to] flee from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 his wife and his sons: 36 on that Day every man among them will have enough concern of his own -- 37 Some faces on that Day shall be beaming with happiness, 38 laughing, rejoicing at glad tidings. 39 And some faces will on that Day with dust be covered, 40 Blackness overcoming them. 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
