He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ (The Prophet (Peace be upon him)) frowned and turned away, 1 because the blind man approached him! 2 for how can you know that he might seek to purify himself, 3 Or become reminded so that the reminder should profit him? 4 As for him who is not in want of any thing, 5 to him thou attendest 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 As for the one who comes to you earnestly (striving for guidance). 8 And is also fearful (of God), 9 From him thou art distracted. 10 No indeed; it is a Reminder 11 So whoever wills, let him pay attention to it. 12 [It is recorded] in honored sheets, 13 exalted, purified, 14 (Written) by the hands of scribes- 15 noble and virtuous scribes. 16 Perish the human! How unthankful he is! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 From a single sperm He created, then proportioned him, 19 Then eased the way for him. 20 Then He causes him to die and be buried. 21 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. 22 But no. He has not fulfilled what was enjoined on him. 23 Let the human being think about (how We produce) his food. 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 and cleaved the earth, cleaving it asunder; 26 and thereupon We cause grain to grow out of it, 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 and olive trees and date-palms, 29 and burgeoning enclosed gardens 30 And fruits and grass, 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 When the trumpet sounds, 33 upon the day when a man shall flee from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 Each man will have enough cares that day. 37 Some faces on that day will be radiant, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news (of Paradise). 39 but others will be gloomy 40 Darkness shall cover them. 41 These are they who are unbelievers, the wicked. 42
