He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 Because there came to him the blind man. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? 4 But the self-sufficient, 5 To him you give attention. 6 And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself 7 And as to him who comes to you striving hard, 8 and in awe of God 9 to him thou payest no heed. 10 Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment, 11 (and whoso wills, shall remember it) 12 in [the light of His] revelations blest with dignity, 13 Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and obedient. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 From what did He create him? 18 Of a drop of seed. He created him and formed him according to a measure. 19 Then maketh the way easy for him, 20 then makes him to die, and buries him, 21 then, He will raise him when He wills. 22 Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 That We pour down the water, pouring (it) down in abundance, 25 And We split the earth in clefts, 26 And cause the grain to grow therein 27 And grapes and fodder, 28 And olives and date-palms, 29 And garden-closes of thick foliage 30 And fruits and herbage 31 an enjoyment for you and your flocks. 32 AND SO, when the piercing call [of resurrection] is heard 33 On that day man will run away from his brother. 34 and from his mother and father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 Some faces will shine, 38 Laughing and full of joy, 39 but others will be gloomy 40 o'erspread with darkness -- 41 these, these will be the ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity! 42
