Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the dawn, 1 By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah). 2 and the even and the odd, 3 and by the night when it moves on towards daybreak (reward and retribution in the next life is an absolute reality). 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 (Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad, 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 the like of whom has never been reared in all the land? 8 And the tribe of Thamud, who hewed rocks in the valley. 9 and with Pharaoh of the stakes? 10 Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands, 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 Verily thy Lord is in an ambuscade, 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 But when He tests him by restricting his provision, he says: 'My Lord has humiliated me' 16 No indeed, but you show no kindness to the orphan, 17 and you urge not the feeding of the needy, 18 And ye devour heritages with devouring greed. 19 and you have a love of wealth which can never be satisfied. 20 No indeed! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 And the Hell on that Day shall be brought nigh. On that Day man shall remember, but how will remembrance avail him? 23 He will say: "Alas the woe! Would that I had sent ahead something in my life." 24 But on that day shall no one chastise with (anything like) His chastisement, 25 And no one binds like He does! 26 'O soul at peace, 27 Return to your Lord well-pleased (with your blissful destination), well-pleasing (to your Lord). 28 Then enter the ranks of My chosen bondmen! 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
