Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses 151 Who corrupt the land and do not reform it." 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
