Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 And [by] ten nights 2 The multiple and the one, 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 is there not in this strong evidence for a man of sense? 5 Did you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) not see (thought) how your Lord dealt with 'Ad (people)? 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 The like of which were not created in the (other) cities; 8 And how did He deal with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the valley? 9 And with Pharaoh, firm of might, 10 They were tyrants in the land 11 and exceeded in corruption therein. 12 So your Lord poured a scourge of punishment over them. 13 Indeed, your Lord is in observation. 14 As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me, 15 But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.” 16 But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan, 17 and do not urge one another to feed the poor, 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 and you love wealth with an ardent love 20 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, 21 and your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? 23 He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life." 24 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, 25 None bindeth as He then will bind. 26 (On the other hand it will be said): “O serene soul! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and well-pleasing Him. 28 Enter thou among My servants! 29 Enter then My garden." 30
