The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 – this city wherein you have been rendered violable– 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and struggle. 4 Does he think that no one can overpower him? 5 (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)". 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?- 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep. 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 It is the freeing of a slave 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 of an orphaned relative 15 or of a needy [stranger] lying in the dust 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 And those who denied Our signs, are the people of the left. 19 Fire will be an awning over them. 20
