The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 And by the begetter (i.e. Adam) and that which he begot (i.e. his progeny); 3 We verily have created man in an atmosphere: 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." 6 Deemest he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 It is the freeing of a slave; 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 To an orphan near of kin. 15 or to a needy person in distress; 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 And those who disbelieve in Our signs, they are the Companions of the Left Hand; 19 and the Fire will close in on them. 20
