The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by yonder city 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 Certainly We have created man to be in distress. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 and a tongue, and two lips, 9 And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways? 10 Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba 11 What will explain to you what the ascent is? 12 The freeing of a slave, 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 To an orphan, having relationship, 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 whereas those who are bent on denying the truth of Our messages - they are such as have lost themselves in evil, 19 with the Fire closed above them. 20
