The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 or by the great father and his wonderful son (Abraham and Ishmael) 3 We have certainly created man into hardship. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 What will explain to you what the ascent is? 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 Or of a homeless needy person! 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 whereas those who are bent on denying the truth of Our messages - they are such as have lost themselves in evil, 19 Fire will be an awning over them. 20
True are the words of Allah the Almighty.
