The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 And you are free to live upon it, -- 2 And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 But he would not try to ascend the steep uphill road... 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 It is the freeing of a slave 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 Of a related orphan, 15 or some needy person in distress, 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 and the Fire will close in on them. 20
