The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ Nay, I swear by this city - 1 And you are free to live upon it, -- 2 and [I call to witness] parent and offspring: 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 He will say: 'I have destroyed a vast wealth' 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 and a tongue, and two lips, 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 [It is] the freeing of one's neck [from the burden of sin,] 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 of an orphaned relative 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 And those who denied Our signs, are the people of the left. 19 [with] fire closing in upon them. 20
