The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 We have certainly created man into hardship. 4 Does he think then that no one has power over him? 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 to an orphaned relative 15 Or of a homeless needy person! 16 Then he became of those who believed and enjoined on each other steadfastness and enjoined on each other compassion. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 And those who denied Our signs, are the people of the left. 19 [with] fire closing in upon them. 20
