The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah). 2 and by parent and offspring, 3 Verily, We have created man into [a life of] pain, toil and trial. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Does he think that none has observed him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 What will explain to you what the ascent is? 12 [It is] the freeing of one's neck [from the burden of sin,] 13 or the feeding, upon a day of [one's own] hunger, 14 Of a related orphan, 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 Fire will be an awning over them. 20
