The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the sun and its midmorning, 1 and by the moon as it follows it, 2 And by the day as it shows up (the sun's) brightness; 3 And by oath of the night when it hides it 4 Consider the sky and its wondrous make, 5 And by the earth and Him Who spread it, 6 And the soul and Him Who made it perfect, 7 and imbued it with (the consciousness of) its evil and its piety: 8 Surely blissful is he who hath cleansed it, 9 And he fails that corrupts it! 10 Samood gave the lie (to the truth) in their inordinacy, 11 when the most wicked man among them rose up. 12 then the Messenger of God said to them, 'The She-camel of God; let her drink!' 13 Then they belied him and they hamstrung her; wherefore their Lord overwhelmed them for their crime, and made it equal. 14 for none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them. 15
