The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 And by Him Who created male and female; 3 surely your strivings are divergent. 4 As for him who gave out his wealth (for Allah's sake) and abstained (from disobeying Him), 5 And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,- 6 We will pave his way to ease. 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 and denied the Truth of goodness: 9 Unto him therefore We shall Indeed make easy the path to hardship. 10 When he falls (into Hell), his wealth will not help him. 11 Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance. 12 And truly, unto Us (belong) the last (Hereafter) and the first (this world). 13 I have warned you about the fierce blazing fire 14 None except the most wicked will enter it. 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 even he who gives his wealth. to purify himself 18 And is under no one's obligation to return his favour, 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
