The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 and by the day as it appears radiantly, 2 And by Him Who created male and female; 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 and have no faith in receiving any reward (from God). 9 We shall facilitate the path to affliction 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance. 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 I have warned you then about a raging Fire: 14 None except the most wicked will enter it. 15 He who denieth and turneth away. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 one who gives his wealth to become purified, 18 not as payment for favours received, 19 Other than seeking the glory of his Lord, most high, 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
