The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By oath of the night when it covers 1 by the day when it appears radiant, 2 And by Who created the male and female, 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 As for he who gives and fears Allah 5 And affirms goodness, 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 And denies the best [reward], 9 for him shall We make easy the path towards hardship: 10 And his substance will avail him not when he perisheth. 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 and to Us belongs the Hereafter as well as the present world -- 13 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 who belied and turned away, 16 The pious ones will be safe from this fire 17 one who gives his wealth to become purified, 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High; 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
