The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night when it covers the day, 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 and by the creation of the male and the female. 3 surely your strivings are divergent. 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,- 6 We shall ease the way of fortune for him. 7 And as for him who stinteth and is heedless, 8 and he belied the finest 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 nor will his wealth profit him when he falls [into the pit]. 11 Indeed guiding is upon Us. 12 And to Us belong the End and the Beginning. 13 I therefore warn you of the fire that is ablaze. 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 who denied [the truth], and turned away. 16 But the righteous one will avoid it - 17 He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 And no one has with him any boon for which he should be rewarded, 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 and the reward (of their Lord) will certainly make them happy. 21
