The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 And by oath of the day when it shines 2 Consider the creation of the male and the female! 3 Indeed, your efforts are diverse. 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 for those who spend for the cause of God, 6 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss. 7 And as for him who is niggardly and considers himself free from need (of Allah), 8 and denied the Truth of goodness: 9 So We will very soon provide him hardship. 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 Surely Ours is it to show the way, 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 Wherefore I have warned you of Fire flaming, 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 He who denieth and turneth away. 16 But the God-fearing shall be kept away from it, 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 And no one has with him any boon for which he should be rewarded, 19 But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High; 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
