The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day resplendent 2 And by Him Who created male and female; 3 surely your strivings are divergent. 4 For him that gives and fears (Allah) 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease. 7 As for him who was a miser and behaved with aversion (to Allah), 8 and he belied the finest 9 We shall surely ease for him the Path of Hardship (the Fire). 10 And what will his wealth benefit him when he goes down (in destruction). 11 Surely, in Our hands is guidance, 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing. 14 None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones 15 Who denies and turns away. 16 One who fears God shall be kept away from it -- 17 Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 and confers no favor upon anyone for recompense 19 only seeking the Face of his Lord the Most High; 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
