The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Recite: In the Name of thy Lord who created, 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Read, for your Lord is most beneficent, 3 The One Who taught to write with the pen. 4 Teacheth man that which he knew not. 5 No indeed; surely Man waxes insolent, 6 for he thinks himself self-sufficient. 7 Indeed, to your Lord is the returning. 8 Have you seen the one who prohibits 9 A bondman of Ours when he prayeth 10 Bethinkest thou, if he is himself guided, 11 Or he commandeth piety? 12 Hast thou seen if he denieth (Allah's guidance) and is froward? 13 Knoweth he not that Allah doth see? 14 Nay! If he (Abu Jahl) ceases not, We will catch him by the forelock, 15 by the lying forelock steeped in sin. 16 So let him call his associates, 17 We will call the guards of Hell (to deal with him)! 18 No indeed! Do not obey him, but prostrate yourself and come closer to God. ۩ 19
