The people of 'Ad, too, rejected the messengers. 123 Their brother Hud asked them, "Why do you not have fear of God? 124 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 125 So fear Allah and obey me. 126 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 127 "Will you, in your wanton folly, build [idolatrous] altars on every height, 128 and do you take to you castles, haply to dwell forever? 129 When you attack, you attack as tyrants do. 130 So fear Allah and obey me. 131 and fear Him who has succoured you with what you know, 132 "He has aided you with cattle and children. 133 “And with gardens and water-springs.” 134 Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day." 135 They said, "Whether you preach to us or not, 136 That is nothing but a habit of the ancients, 137 And we are not going to be punished. 138 And so they gave him the lie: and thereupon We destroyed them. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 139 Surely your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 140
