۞ AND, INDEED, long before [the time of Moses] We vouchsafed unto Abraham his consciousness of what is right; and We were aware of [what moved] him 51 When he said to his father and his people: "What are these idols to which you cling so passionately?" 52 They answered: "We found our forefathers worshipping them." 53 He said, "Both you and your fathers have certainly been in error." 54 They said: "Are you expressing your true ideas before us or are you jesting?" 55 He said, "[No], rather, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth who created them, and I, to that, am of those who testify. 56 Abraham said to himself, "By God! I will devise a plan against their idols when they are away." 57 Then he reduced them to fragments, all save the chief of them, that haply they might have recourse to it. 58 They said: Who hath done this to our gods? Surely it must be some evil-doer. 59 They said: We heard a youth speak of them, who is called Ibrahim. 60 They said: bring him then before the eyes of the people, haply they may bear witness. 61 They said: Have you done this to our gods, O Ibrahim? 62 He said: rather he hath wrought it, this big one of them; so question them, if they ever speak. 63 Then they thought and observed: "Surely you are yourselves unjust." 64 With their heads cast down they said, "Abraham, you know that idols do not speak. How then can you ask such a question?" 65 He said, “What! You worship, instead of Allah, one that neither benefits you nor harms you?” 66 Uff to you and to what you worship instead of Allah. Then will you not use reason?" 67 They said, "Burn him and help your deities, if you are resolved to do something." 68 But We said, "Fire! Be cool and a means of safety for Abraham." 69 They wished to entrap him, but We made them greater losers. 70 We saved him and Lot, and brought them to the land which We had blessed for all the worlds. 71 And We bestowed him Ishaq, and Yaqub the grandson; and We made all of them worthy of Our proximity. 72 And We made them leaders, guiding (mankind) by Our Command, and We inspired in them the doing of good deeds, performing Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), and the giving of Zakat and of Us (Alone) they were worshippers. 73 And Lut! We vouchsafed unto him judgment and knowledge, and We delivered him out of the city which had been working foul deeds; verily they were a people evil, wicked. 74 And We caused him to enter into Our mercy; verily he was of the righteous. 75
