Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha'. Mim. 1 I swear by the illustrious Book. 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 The command that We have been sending 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. 11 (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. 12 But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). 15 On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. 16 ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. 17 saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." 21 Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 and sown fields, fine sitting places, 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29

Notes and Instructions
When reading the Colorful Quran in English transliterated Arabic mode, you may not notice that there is an algorithm designed to match the pause requirements of the original Arabic scripture, (waqf signs). As you may know, the original Arabic Quran has five main types of pauses, (waqf) signs. (1) Compulsory break, where the transliteration uses a full stop. (2) Optional pause with the preference for pausing, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a probability of two thirds. (3) Optional stop with an equal preference for pausing and resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a half-half probability. (4) Optional pause with the preference for resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a chance of one third. (5) Attraction pause, also called hugging, or (mu’anaka) sign, where it is compulsory to pause at either one of two nearby positions, but not both; where the transliteration inserts a comma at either one of the two locations with a half-half probability.
