A large group from the earlier generations. 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!" 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
