Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with Ad, 6 [With] Iram - who had lofty pillars, 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 And the mighty Pharaoh 10 Who did transgress beyond bounds in the lands (in the disobedience of Allah). 11 and exceeded in corruption therein. 12 Wherefore thy Lord poured on them the scourge of His torment. 13 Indeed nothing is hidden from the sight of your Lord. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him by exalting him and bestowing His bounties upon him, he says: “My Lord has exalted me.” 15 But when he tries him and stints for him his provision, then he says, 'My Lord has despised me.' 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 and you do not urge one another to feed the needy, 18 And you eat away the heritage, devouring (everything) indiscriminately, 19 And you love wealth with immense love. 20 Surely when We pound the earth to powder grounded, pounded to dust, 21 And your Lord comes with the angels in rows, 22 And the Hell on that Day shall be brought nigh. On that Day man shall remember, but how will remembrance avail him? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 But on that Day none will punish as He (Allah) will punish, 25 And none will bind as He will bind. 26 (To the righteous soul will be said:) "O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction! 27 Return unto thine Lord well pleased and well-pleasing. 28 enter, then, together with My [other true] servants 29 Enter My Paradise." 30
