The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the night when it enshrouds, 1 And by the day as it appears in brightness; 2 And by Who created the male and female, 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 For him that gives and fears (Allah) 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 We will facilitate for him the easy end. 7 As for him who was a miser and behaved with aversion (to Allah), 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 And what will his wealth benefit him when he goes down (in destruction). 11 It is indeed for Us to show the way, 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 where none shall burn except the most wicked, 15 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. 16 But save him who fears 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 And is under no one's obligation to return his favour, 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
