۞ AND, INDEED, long before [the time of Moses] We vouchsafed unto Abraham his consciousness of what is right; and We were aware of [what moved] him 51 Recall, when he said to his father and his people: "What are these images to which you are devoutly clinging?" 52 They said: We found our fathers worshippers of them. 53 He said: 'Truly, you and your fathers are in clear error' 54 They said: "Are you speaking in earnest, or only jesting?" 55 He said: "In fact it was your Lord, the Lord of the heavens and the earth, who created them; and I bear witness to this. 56 And, by Allah! I will certainly do something against your idols after you go away, turning back. 57 He shattered them all, except the biggest among them, that perhaps they may question it. 58 They asked (on return): "Who has done this to our gods? He is surely a mischief-monger." 59 Some said, "We heard a young man, called Abraham, talking about them." 60 They said: "Then bring him before the eyes of the people, that they may testify." 61 'Abraham' they said, 'was it you who did this to our gods' 62 He answered: "Rather it was this supreme one who has done it. So ask them, if they can speak." 63 Then they thought and observed: "Surely you are yourselves unjust." 64 Then crestfallen (they confessed): "Truly, as you know, they cannot speak." 65 He said: Worship ye then instead of Allah that which cannot profit you at all, nor harm you? 66 Fie upon you and upon that which ye worship beside Allah! Will ye not then reflect? 67 They said: "Burn him, and come to the support of your gods, if you are going to do anything." 68 Allah said, "O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham." 69 They had sought to do evil to him, but We caused them to be the worst losers, 70 But We delivered him and (his nephew) Lut (and directed them) to the land which We have blessed for the nations. 71 And We bestowed upon him Ishaque (Isaac), and (a grandson) Ya'qub (Jacob). Each one We made righteous. 72 And We made them into leaders to guide people in accordance with Our command, and We inspired them to good works, and to establish Prayers and to give Zakah. They worshipped Us alone. 73 To Lot, We gave judgment and knowledge and saved him from the village that had been committing corrupt deeds; for they were an evil nation and were debauched. 74 We encompassed him in Our mercy; he was a righteous man. 75
