Thamud denied the messengers 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 “And I do not ask from you any fee for it; my reward is only upon the Lord Of The Creation.” 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
