Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 I swear by the illustrious Book. 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 On which all affairs are sorted out and decided 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 Covering the people, this is a painful torment. 11 [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” 14 Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). 15 On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. 20 And if you do not believe me, then leave me' 21 (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." 22 [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. 23 Cross the sea by cutting a path through it. Pharaoh's army will be drowned. 24 How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. 25 and sown fields and splendid mansions, 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people. 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
