The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By oath of the beloved shining star Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him), when he returned from the Ascent. 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he deluded; 2 nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is but a divine revelation, which is revealed to him. 4 and taught to him 5 One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form 6 While he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] was in the highest part of the horizon, 7 He (Gabriel) then came nearer and nearer. 8 And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; 9 and revealed to God's servant what he revealed. 10 The heart did not lie [about] what it saw. 11 Will you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 He certainly saw him (Gabriel) during his other ascent 13 Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass: 14 Nigh unto which is the Garden of Abode. 15 When the lote-tree was being enveloped, by whatever around it. 16 (His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong! 17 and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord. 18 So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza? 19 And Manat, the third, the last? 20 Is it for you the males and for Him the females? 21 This is an unfair distinction! 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them. 23 Shall man have whatsoever he wisheth for! 24 But it is to God that the Hereafter and this world belong. 25
