The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 And his kin that harboured him 13 And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 who testify to what they have witnessed, 33 and who observe their prayers. 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
